Tracts

Tracts?

Christians are often nervous when they first begin sharing the gospel. While some take the "all out" approach to evangelism and immediately start witnessing one-on-one, others look for a way to ease themselves into sharing the gospel. Gospel tracts are a great place to start.

A gospel tract is a small handout that uses an attention-grabber to swing from the natural to the spiritual and present the gospel. The attention grabber could be anything from fake money, to trivia, to cartoons. Cheep, easy to carry, and yielding the gospel, they are perfect for getting the message of Jesus Christ to the lost.

When preaching and private tale are not available, you need to have a tract ready...get good striking tracts, or none at all...therefore, do not go out without your tracts...Let each one of us, if we have done nothing for Christ, begin to do something now. The distribution of Gospel tracts is the first thing." Charles Spurgeon

Many Christians view tracts as worthless (afterall, can somebody actually get saved from such a simple handout? Does anyone actually read those things?). Yes they can, and yes they do. Both Hudson Taylor and the great preacher George Whitefield were saved because the Lord used a tract to get them the gospel. The Lord also graciously used a gospel tract to save my own grandmother. Do not limit God by thinking He cannot use a tract in somebody's life. He can, and He does.

Like I said before, tracts are an excellent way to begin sharing the gospel. Not only are they a start, but they are a method of sharing the gospel that you can use every single day. I began by simply leaving tracts wherever I went. Here are some great places to leave tracts (remember, they can go anywhere, the following list simply gives some suggestions):

  • Letters and bills
  • Gas stations
  • Restaraunts (you could leave a tract with the bill and tip)
  • Car windows
  • Beer and soda cases (simply slide a smaller tract into the slit)
  • Newspaper racks
  • 'Free giveaway' tables (often if I see a table with free papers to pick up, I will simply drop 20 or 30 tracts on the table)
  • Fast food restaraunt windows (hand one out when you pay)
  • ATM machines
  • Inside relgious books (when the His Dark Materials books [anti-Christian fiction] were popular, I would slide a tract into the middle of each book)

You get the point. Leave tracts anywhere and everywhere you go! You can, and should, also hand tracts directly to people walking by. Simply reach out a tract with a friendly smile and ask, "Did you get one of these?" People sometimes turn you down, but will likely take the tract. You will be surprised how often people ask, "What is it?" There you go! Perfect introduction to a conversation about eternity.

Remember, handing out tracts is a great start to sharing the gospel, and is something we should all do, but we cannot let handing out tracts become the extent of our evangelistic efforts. We must always be looking for opportunities to verbally talk to people about Jesus Christ.

Recommended Tracts

Simply because a tract says 'gospel' on it does not make it a good piece of literature to be handing to lost people. Hundreds of tracts contain a watered down, weak gospel that would be better placed in a trash can than in the hands of the lost. In addition, some tracts fail to create that 'attention grabber' that is so pivotal and key when it comes to having a well made gospel tract. I have seen hundreds of different tracts over the years, and the following are my favorites. They all come with my recommendation. Pick of some tracts today! My favorite two website for purchasing tracts are Living Waters and Custom Tract Source.

Million Dollar Bill

Million Dollar Bill

The Million Dollar Bill, produced by Living Waters, is probably my favorite tract. I have actually had people walk up to me and ask, "Can I have one?" People love them, and they are perfect for handing out on the streets. Purchase the Million Dollar Bill.

Mind Game

Mind Game

Another great tract from Living Waters, Mind Game uses a card trick to catch the readers attention and swing from the natural to the spiritual. I especally like this tract because it is great for handing to people, and is sturdy enough to easily stick in car driver side doors. I have often seen people find the tract, stop what they are doing, and read the tract on site. Purchase Mind Game.

Smart Card

Smart Card

Another great one for both handing out and putting on cars, the Smart Card is smaller than most tracts. The front of the card prompts the reader to put his or her thumb on the 'thumbpad'. If it turns a different color, the person is morally good. Of course, none of us are good by God's standards. The tract uses that to then swing to the gospel. Purchase the Smart Card.
